THEATRE STATE
"Theatre State" s an original idea by Isabel Lagos and Erika Webe. It is a feature film project that aims to develop a unique visual narrative, created by a team of deaf and hearing artists. The script has been written, and they are currently building this universe through a series of short films.
CONCEPT
In a city where artists are museum pieces, the last standing theatre is due to be demolished so as to make space for the construction of a Telecommunication Park, but an unusual group of characters meet with a different idea in mind.

It is difficult to find us, the marginalised ones,
and a necessity for the change we seek,
but first we must remember.

THE STORY
An old train arrives at a rainy and dark station; a trunk opens in one of the carriages. A travelling performer walks the streets barefoot and pulls the same trunk on wheels until she finds herself looking up at smoke and flames from the attic window of an abandoned theatre. A deaf actor and an old painter live in the doomed building. So it is that the three embark on an adventure that maybe, just maybe might save the theatre from demolition and humanity from itself. Our protagonists are joined by nine quite particular characters, a retired photographeress and a local boy. All play essential roles in The Great Theatre’s uncertain future.

DEVELOPMENT STATUS
The script is complete. Through New Cultural Frabrics R&D, a series of short films and theatre piece is being developed. These stories are born from scenes in the script and offer new ways of telling the story. The team is also coming together through this process.

A lonely bureaucrat from the culture department sits down with a glass of wine. Feet of a man walking the streets in flip flops. The woman arrives at a small theatre in a cul-de-sac, she has a paper with her detailing a small theatre for imminent closure. A deaf actor and an old puppeter live in the backstage of the small theatre. So it is that the three embark on an adventure that maybe, just maybe might save the theatre
from demolition and humanity from itself but as it is as it is, it is an encounter without destination. Our protagonists are joined by a two characters that seem to be there and not, a girl and a receptionist.
